SiPM/Geiger mode Devices

Hi all,

Has anyone ever considered using Allpix-Squared for the simulation of silicon devices that operate in Geiger mode rather than proportional mode (ex: silicon photomultipliers or SiPMs)? In theory this should be a simpler system because the full charge cloud need not be traced and read out in favor instead of just the presence or lack of an avalanche.

I don’t think this type of device can be simulated currently but I would be very happy to be proven wrong. Has anyone else thought about or attempted work toward this application?

Dear @amsteinh

currently we cannot simulate this type of device, and possibly a microscopic MC simulation is not the right tool for it. Due to the exponential growth of the number of charge carriers in the bulk, the computing time would equally explode.

There are several simulation tools developed by Massimiliano Antonello at Uni Hamburg, some of which you can find here: SiPM · GitLab

I would suggest contacting him for further advice in this direction!
All the best,
Simon
